The Marty Gallasch Story:
Marty is extremely passionate about sport in particular Hockey, and fundamentally the Nuriootpa Hockey Club.
Marty is extremely collaborative in his style of getting the job done. This is one of the terrific qualities of Marty as a club person.
Marty as a young man required constant feedback, in order to improve to become a better player - sometimes this required direct and honest feedback - Marty took this on board, and when given challenges strived to please his coaches. He was not a naturally gifted player - but rather had to continually work on all aspects of his game.
Marty is a likeable character and has a passion for reminiscing, and telling stories of the past – sometimes these stories get a bit cloudy as to the detail – but nevertheless, they are always entertaining.
In the early 2000’s Marty took up the challenge of becoming a permanent / full-time goalkeeper. This has been the most wonderful, engaging, and productive partnership between Marty and the NHC.
He has represented NHC with honour, passion and commitment and in turn, he has been rewarded with many premierships, captaincy, and now as the A-Grade Men Coach. Who could ever forget his BOG in the 2011 Grand Final?
Marty has also been a long term BVHA player and most recently as a State Country player.
These are some of the rewards for hard work, belief and dedication.
However, the area where Marty has excelled has been at the coalface of the NHC Junior program. Marty has coached at this level for over a decade, with 9 years at U13/14 level and 2 years in charge of our U18 program.
These teams have been a mixed gender group with many fill-ins from the age group below - this is an enormous task to continually challenge all players to be the best that they can be - and assure them that it is not about any individual but rather the team as a collective. Marty has endeavoured to have every player ready for the next junior age group, and where possible, ready for Senior Hockey.
Marty has always been a wonderful committee person - Vice President, BVHA representative, NHC Property officer, NHC & BVHA Publicity officer. Marty is always prepared to play the devils’ advocate - challenging us all with the way we think and how we can adapt to change.
Marty has been instrumental in getting the hockey message to the local papers and having them run with it. The Grand Final coverage over the last few years is a wonderful example of Marty’s ability to get others on side.
A true Nuriootpa Hockey Club man.
