The Marie Waechter Story:

Marie is best described as a quiet achiever.  She’s happiest doing the necessary jobs behind the scenes and has never looked for any praise or recognition.  Marie epitomises the Family club ethos that NHC has been founded on.

From the early nineties, during the winter months, Marie and the Waechter clan were at the Stockwell grounds from early in the morning setting up the canteen, making sure children had their sticks, shinnies and a can-do attitude; and they would be some of the last to leave when the canteen had been packed up, dishes done and the money handed to the treasurer.  Along this period, the Canteen was the most important on-going fundraiser that the club had; this was before ongoing high level Sponsorships were sought or available.

Along with the Camilleri and Auricht families, hockey was an obsession and at Nuri where any club function was held at the Clubrooms, Marie would gather the troops and organise the food for the event. Pig on the spit nights with all the trimmings carefully organised and attention to detail under the watchful eye of Marie.

Marie made a special commitment to the Stockwell Recreation Park as the NHC Delegate for 8 years and then as a local resident for the next 8 years.  Marie always pushed the NHC cause whenever she could and gave a level of consistency, where the rest of the NHC committee could get on with managing the day to day activities of the club.

There are very few players that are able to compete for well over 20 years.

Marie has been fortunate to have played every year since 1994, securing one A-Grade and 3 B-Grade Premierships along the way.  In her twentieth Senior season, she was awarded the Best & Fairest in the B -Grade, a great reward for 2 decades of commitment to the game an our club.

She is presently one of 4 players to have played 300 games for our Club.

Marie is a great club person and has a great balance of work, family and the Nuriootpa Hockey Club
