The Jan Tregenza Story:
What can we say about this Lovely kind hearted softly spoken lady? Here's one thing that we can say about her... if all people were like Jan, the world be a better place.
Jan has a decorated sporting career starting at an early age. She played in the junior netball sides and the State teams for softball and hockey also representing the state in the u/21's basketball side, whilst still playing hockey up to the age of 22. She then became married to Trevor and soon after arrived their first child, Jarrod, then came along Owen followed by William. Having children slowed her sporting career for a while until she then picked up the stick again in her 30's as well as teaching Physical Education at first Lyndoch primary and then moving to Kapunda primary school.
Jan started with the Nuriootpa Hockey Club in the early 90's due to her love of sport and also her three sons were keen to play. We were yet to see husband Trevor pick up a stick, but we're sure the camera would have been poised.
Jan Started in a coaching position with the Minkeys in 1994/95 with the u11 Green team for couple years due to her eldest son, but then moved up a level to the juniors whilst still coaching in the minkey grades. She then took on the Minkey Coordinator role.
Jan also coordinated approximately 5 classes of screaming 8 year old hockey stick wielding kids from the Nuriootpa Primary School and precinct, if that wasn't enough she would also invite another 5 bus loads from the Riverland to play them against. She also got together some volunteer's to give her a hand, and this is where you would hear her not so softly spoken voice.
Jan not only organised the minkey and junior trainings, she also had a hand in organising ten pin bowling nights and disco's etc, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Jan also organised junior volunteers to help her out at the trainings.
She would also manage in her busy time to go to the schools in the Barossa region e.g. Freeling, Kapunda, Greenock and Lights Pass to hand out flyers to all the children to come play minkey hockey for Nuriootpa Hockey Club. For these efforts and not only these efforts she was awarded the Kellett Family award in 2001, 2004 and 2007 for outstanding contribution to the club. She was a member on the NHC committee volunteering her time to the Club for eleven years.
Jan also played hockey for Nuri on and off between 1997 through to 2003. During this time, she received many awards as an outstanding player - winning the Best & Fairest (A, Grade) for NHC women in 2000 and Best on ground in the 2000 Grand Final.
She also was awarded the BVHA Best and Fairest A-Grade in 2000 and again in 2002.
Jan had to be secretly invited back in 2008 so we could present her the Nuriootpa Hockey Club Life Membership Award, which she gladly accepted to everyone’s approval and delight. Jan Tregenza - Love your work!
