The Jig Zidov Story:

Jig played over 150 games for the club during her playing career.

She won 4 A grade Premierships and a club A grade Best & Fairest

Jig also served as our club Vice President, Treasurer, canteen manager and committee member for many years.

In our first decade as a club, few if any people had more of an impact on this club. Jig devoted an enormous amount of time to our club in the 1980’s.

Back then our fledgling club was not strong – financially or in numbers. We had no home ground, struggled to field a Mens team – & junior teams were still a long way off. Financially we relied on cake stalls, BBQ’s, grape picking – anything that could help pay the bills. Many years of trading tables, raffles & Vintage Festival work was undertaken by Jig to help keep our club afloat & growing.

She also helped design & make some of our earlier uniform, club windcheaters and our first club banner.

Jig was the driving force behind nearly every fundraiser & social event. Just as importantly she usually was also the driving force behind instigating a few drinks after a fundraiser. She has always been one of the people that brought the club together to celebrate. Whether it was Fancy dress parties, club dinners or working bees – she was involved boots & all.

Jig was one of the personalities that made other people want to join our club.

She was also not backward in informing other club members when their behaviour was not up to the standard expected by the NHC – various senior players have been on the receiving end of a telling off when required.

Before we knew it, we had a club & a club culture.

I don’t think it is possible to overstate the influence Jig had on our fledgling club. Without her input we would have a very different club today.

Jig is still involved in our club. Supporting her grandchildren from the sidelines [always resplendent on GF day!], supporting our fundraising & she was on the organising committee for our 40 year anniversary celebrations.

Jig’s is forever entwined with the Nuriootpa Hockey Club – it is hard to imagine one without the other. She is truly part of the DNA of our club.

Appropriately Jig was awarded Life membership at our club’s 40th Anniversary celebration.
